Naval mines of this type were anchored in place, the cask containing the explosive charge floating beneath the surface. When touched by a vessel, the mine exploded.

WWI and WWII, hundreds of thousands of naval mines were laid in the
Baltic and the North Sea by the German and the Allied sides alike, which
were removed by German mine sweeping squadrons after the end of both
World Wars.
